Sasawat Intakul is studying at Gnomon, full-time for a 2-year program. He graduated in 2019 in Thailand from Silpakorn University and decided to move to pursue his dream as a 3D character Design artist at LA. He has experience of working in animation and 3D printing fields as a freelancer for products such as likeness sculpts, toys, and helmets in life-size.
Saswat Intakul is a Gnomon student. Gnomon is a college offering degree and professional training institution to specialize in education to be suitable for game industries and visual effects. Gnomon gives plenty of options for education and helps students in reaching their goals. They get a degree in addition to a vocational certificate program. These are individual courses suitable for entertainment industry offering professional enrichment. The campus of Gnomon has nine computer labs. It is located in California. The sculpture workshop is dedicated, there are four drawing classrooms, multiple student lounges, a greenscreen stage, and industry-inspired facilities helping the aspiring artists feel at home.
Sasawat Intakul has Manga drawing as a background. The characters are the main interest for him since a long time. He makes characters that are exceptionally good and he has been doing in 3D characters from 2011. The first software in 3D that he chose was ZBrush and he loved the medium since then. He started learning 3D due to his passion for characters and videogames.
Saswat Intakul shared his character ‘The Oni’ that he was doing. It was his final task project at Gnomon. He already worked on ‘The Spirit’ the Japanese ghost as his own take from the game Dead by Daylight. He worked on the Oni next to complete them both as a killers set of the same universe. He is highly passionate about the art and culture of Japan and this makes his work more enjoyable.
Saswat first made sure to fit a 3D character Design picture in his mind. So he took the actual samurai armor and got a clue of how the pieced fit. He decides in the start about how the picture should appear at the end. The character presentation aspects such as the camera angle, the pose, and tone dictate the character aspect. Mimicking the image as close as possible in his mind is a way of starting a picture for him.
He uses a male base mesh for sculpting and it helps speed up the process. As the first step he uses meshes as the armor parts and later uses ZRemesheer so that he can clean the topology. Three main brushes are Dam standard, Clay build up, and Move brushes, that he uses for his projects. He explains how he created the Oni’s neck and armor. He used mask brush for the engravings for the chest armor pieces and for the gold pieces on the sword. He adds a lot of details on the mesh and uses various options to his satisfaction and perfection.
For the hair, he used Maya-XGen so that it resembles a scalp. He used modifiers such as noise and clumping to create believable hair, to look perfect. This was a presentation project and so there was not much to worry about. He used the ZBrush combination and cut manually in Maya the UVs. For smaller pieces, he used ZBrush the Unwrap UV that ensures saving time and control painting. He always manually fixes anything in Maya. Sasawat did his project using fill layers, hand-painting, white and black masks, generators, etc.
He used mask to make a red fill combination layer. He used normal map inside Photoshop and added a few wood details. . He also painted some parts with gold and white color. He drew the clothes patterns using Photoshop in white and black and gave a fill layer in gold.
The idea of Sasawat was to keep it non-destructive and the aim was to go and tweak anything to his liking within the material. His focus was 3D character Design and wants the character to keep it strong and to make his armor pieces and mask glow. So he used Photoshop instead or merely painting the glow. He accepts that the stage involves plenty of errors and trials, as per each person’s taste. He loves to give light colors keeping to green or blue shade, as the character is already strong with glowing armor pieces and mask.
3D Character Design
