Thirty years exploring and folding the nature of the circle resulted in the artist Bradford Hansen- Smith generating and developing interest in the systems with paper circles. He liked the paper sculpture, joining and reconfiguring the circles through proportional folding.
He does not cut or measure, it is on the unity held as a unit circle. He works in various classrooms and students from grade firsts to the university level, home schools and to the gifted students. He teaches them the art of folding circles.
Folding circles is a process displaying information not following the traditional methods of construction. It is a process systematically generating structural pattern of formation, transformations, reformations, and all in-formation. It is the same as expanding thoughts about
mathematics education, geometry, sciences, the arts, and the way it reflects and observes based on the information.
Bradford Hansen-Smith calls this movement as a process demonstrating spherical undifferentiated wholeness to individualized systems and parts of principled organization. It is a revelation process, different from traditional construction and synthesizing methods.
He says his models are explorations into the folded paper circle of nature as a self-generating and comprehensive form. It requires folded regular systematically triangular grid. The reconfiguring endless circle of this grid features multiple joining and various frequencies generating extraordinary formal systems and reveals unexpected mathematical information. His models are unique as his imagination and the reality.
Drawing and making things is to understand the world and to explore. He made his living for many years as a sculptor before realizing and knowing the spatial movement patterns and the way they worked. He was introduced to geometry by Buckminster Fuller and after exploring for ten years the transformation pattern formation of nature it came to dawn about spherical origin.
The nature of paper folding sculpture, its circles and sequential folding process and reconfiguring the joining of multiple circles is principled. The circle appears to be comprehensive, direct, hands-on and experimental tool. He says cutting the circle is destroying unity. It is best to limit to the fragment construction separation.
The folding of circle generates enormous information, patterns, relationships, functions, and proportions fundamental to the arts, math, and the sciences. The education value of a circle is
great showing everything existing. The circle is self-referencing.
Drawing circles is a practice preventing from exploring the circles comprehensive nature. It is difficult to anticipate the circle image and the generated information, its reconfigurations possible through simple folding. The increased origami interest perpetuates belief in the square. However, as a sculptor, he was interested in the circle and its nature. After exploring for ten years, he understood the pattern of geometry and the organized movement systems in space.
There is no historical evidence of the folding circles anywhere. Nothing is arbitrary about the folding circles. The generated principles lead to endless possibilities. He is impressed by the paper folding sculpture of circles and the wholeness of the circle, offering value to the generated information through folding and joining circles.
