Holika or Holi rangoli refers to a spring festival celebrated in India at the spring season approach, in the Phalguna month, during 3 or 4 days preceding the full moon day. It is a celebration of colors. The colors are thrown and there is colored powder all in the air. The festival narrates the good triumph over wickedness, with the appearance of spring.
Holika includes colorful patterns of Rangoli painted to houses and doorways. Families assemble by throwing coconut and Prasad in the fire marking the Holi festival beginning with the spring. Holi represents the conquest of sensual and spiritual value. It has different mythological connotations in India and it is interesting to learn the spiritual significance from different parts.
Rangoli is a tradition that has endless tradition and is called Kolam, Aripoma or Alpana in different languages. The designs are through ages and the word rong is from ‘rang’ and ‘aavalli’ words representing row of colors. The colors and designs are changed and they follow fundamental patterns. The story is amount ancient demoniac King Hiranya Kasyapu known for being cruel and he did not spare his son Prahlad, a Vishne devotee. The king punished his son Prahlad in many ways, but he returned unhurt. Even with Holika sitting with Prahlad in the fire was burnt to death. Thus, Prahlad destroyed Hiranya Kasyapu and had a triump over his being a devotee of Lord Vishnu.
Rangoli is a colorful floor motif found in the Hindu households. Women draw the rangoli using organic powdery material that is essentially organic. The Holi rangoli design includes different grains, sandal, turmeric, leaf extracts, flower extracts, and specific soil extracts.
