Javier Benítez (Javier Benver), since childhood loved drawing and dedicated all his time in creating 3D Girl Model characters. He is a freelance artist in Barcelona, Spain. He shares his artistic journey with insight.
Javier’s involvement with art started at his young age. He got some money and he bought some paper from the nearby store. He spent his days in drawing and did not attempt in playing. He started working in a factory and forgot working in a place that is art-related. He believed it is a fantasy thing reserved only for rich or elite class people.
In 2004, he picked his brushes again and he continues creating. He loved Akira Toriyamas work and it has a great influence and impact on his work. His first 3D work was in 2010-2011 for 3D printing. Later, after a couple of years, he wished to know more about 3D films, videogames, and modeling. This triggered him to enroll in a two-year course, and soon he was participating in interesting projects. Since 2015, he started working in videogames and is now working for different clients as a freelance 3D artist.
Javier began working with oil and acrylic in 2007 and then changed to digital. He says he found it difficult initially to make this transition. Besides, there were not many materials available easily to learn or know new techniques. Now many are self-taught artists as they have online classes given by best professional of this industry.
Javier says he learned 2D by drawing a lot and it helped him as he watched Nico di Mattias speed paintings. He says there is a lot to learn by watching the process of other artist drawing. It was hard he accepts for him to learn 3D and his first 3D program was in 2011 with ZBrush. He claims that it was a mixed feeling of hate and love with this 3D program and now he just loves this tool and it is his main tool. He accepts that ZBrush has helped him in training in modeling for videogames, and to see the entire process.
Javier began with 3D Girl Model, but his main focus was with the artistic aspect. He says he did not give much importance to the technical aspect. However, over time he learned the technical features and believes it is a must for everyone in this industry to learn it. He says there is a difference in the work that he did few years ago. It is because the recent works have an incorporation of look dev, better lighting, and creating with Xgen the hair.
Javier says being an artist, 2D or 3D, is quite demanding. There is a need for lots of patience. Even if you feel the job is complete, there is a need to give one more day to it, so that you go through it the next day to see if you have missed out on something. Focusing on a project that you are doing for a particular period is a must, so that you give a proper completion.
Javier has drawn many pieces and his favorite piece is the Khal Drogo Fanart. He says he could show everything in this art work. He also learnt a lot and its style is a combination between caricature, featuring more details and complex shaders.
Javier likes sketching his imagination. He finds it wonderful and loves the work of Djamila Knopf. He likes her creation process and style. He is continuing with his works and gaining attention of people. He is a persistent learner and continues to do and find new jobs periodically. It will give him an opportunity to learn something new. He also likes to explain his works so that newbies can get the hold of it.
Javier is happy with his acquired skills to do 3D Girl Model, but wants to do good technical jobs, so that it is not boring. He wishes to delve into different styles and believes it will be interesting than realism. He says anyone wishing to be an artist should focus on specific things. To be an outstanding artist, there is a need to find a discipline and to spend time on it. He says seeking excellence does not happen overnight. It takes time and a lot of sacrifice.
